M was born on November 26, 1949 in Bathgate, Scotland, the only child of Thomas and Janet Galbraith who owned and ran the village shoe shop in Harthill.
Martha was educated at Airdrie Academy, and went on to train as a Junior School Teacher at Hamilton Teacher Training College before moving to Bradford.
